What's new in the Professional Reference Edition

The first edition of Paul McFedries' Windows 95 Unleashed was a rousing success and I received lots of kudos from readers and reviewers. I thank all of you for your kind and often too-generous comments.

Windows 95 is a moving target, however, what with the service packs, driver and software updates, service releases, and so on. To keep the book current, this special Professional Reference Edition boasts approximately 300 pages of new material and a vast array of changes and additions. Here's a summary of what to expect:

Better organization: I revamped the book's outline to make it things easier to find and to group topics in a more logical manner. For example, there is now a separate architecture chapter and a separate chapter covering network administration and security.

New tips and notes: I've discovered (or, more often, stumbled upon) a boatload of interesting Windows 95 tips and ideas in the year or so since I completed the first edition. I've incorporated many of these gems throughout the book.

OSR2 coverage: Microsoft's release of the OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) represents an important step in the continuing evolution of Windows 95. I cover all of the new OSR2 features and updates and I tell you how to get OSR2 components if you're not lucky enough to have an OSR2 machine.

Improved networking coverage: Windows 95 networking is a crucial yet confusing topic. To help you get over this often formidable hurdle, I expanded the networking coverage from two chapters to four and included an entirely new chapter on troubleshooting Windows 95 networking.

Expanded Internet material: The Internet seems to be where all the action is these days, and Windows 95 is a big part of that. So it made sense to beef up the Internet coverage considerably. To that end, I've updated all of the existing material and added four new chapters that cover NetMeeting, Internet Mail, Internet News, and Personal Web Server.

More appendices: This edition adds no less than six new appendices. The extra material covers Windows 95's command line syntax, how to perform custom and server-based Windows 95 installations, the Windows ANSI character set, primers on both HTML and batch files, and a review of the OSI networking model.
