A Florentine Notebook

Postcard No. 1

Boboli Gardens: Wednesday, 1:00 PM

Buon giorno!

I doubt I can find the words to describe the perfection of this moment, but I'll give it a whirl. After a morning crammed with Renaissance masterpieces—from Raphael and Rubens to Tintoretto and Titian—at the Palazzo Pitti, I found myself craving pasta and beer. So I climbed the nearby hills to reach the famed Kaffeehaus in the Boboli Gardens. From my ringside seat on the outdoor terrace, all of Florence is laid out below me, with the spectacular Florentine mountains behind adding an exclamation point. It's a gorgeous, sunny, day, my tummy is filled with pasta, and the beer is like the nectar of the gods. I'm as happy as I've ever been.
