CGI Resources on the Web


If your service provider or Web hosting provider doesn't have ready-to-run CGI programs that you can use, there's no shortage of sites on the Net that are only too happy to either teach you CGI or supply you with programs. This section runs through a list of some of these sites:

Mind Your CGI Program Ps and Qs
Note that if you grab a program or two to use, you'll need to contact your service provider's administrator to get the full lowdown on how to set up the program. In most cases, the administrator will want to examine the program code to make sure it's up to snuff. If it passes muster, they'll put it in a special directory (usually called a cgi-bin), and then you can refer to the program in your form.

Bravenet: This site offers lots of free scripts and other Webmaster goodies. Here's the address:

CGI 101 As its name implies, this site offers beginner-level training and tutorials for CGI wanna-programmers. It also offers CGI hosting, links to other CGI sites, and much more. Here's the URL:

The CGI Directory This site is bursting at the seams with great CGI info. There are tutorials, book reviews, a FAQ, links to other CGI sites, and hundreds of scripts. Here's the URL:

CGIExpo This is a nice site with lots of links to scripts, tutorials, mailing lists, books, and much more. Here's the address:

The CGI Resource Index If there's a good CGI resource on the Web, this site knows about it. It has thousands of links to scripts, tutorials, articles, programmers for hire, and much more. Tap the following address into your browser:

Extropia This site is the brainchild of Selena Sol and Gunther Birznieks, and it's one of the best CGI resources on the Web. Here's the address:

Matt's Script Archive Matt Wright has written tons of CGI scripts and graciously offers them gratis to the Web community. He has scripts for a guest book, random link generator, animation, and lots more. It's a great site and a must for would-be CGI mavens. Here's the URL:

NCSA—The Common Gateway Interface This is the place on the Web for CGI info. NCSA (the same folks who made the original Mosaic browser) has put together a great collection of tutorials, tips, and sample programs. Here's the locale:

ScriptSearch This site bills itself as "The World's Largest CGI Library," and with thousands of scripts in dozens of categories, I believe them. Here's where to go:

Usenet A useful spot for CGI tips and tricks, or just to hang around with fellow Web programmers, is the following Usenet newsgroup:

Yahoo's CGI Index This is a long list of CGI-related resources. Many of the links have either CGI how-to info or actual programs you can use. Here's where to go:
